Our neighbour saw Josh’s potential and agreed to loan him a car to race in the Max5 Championships. I was so annoyed and I told Josh, in front of her, that there was nothing he couldn’t do and we would make sure that he had every opportunity to make his dreams come true. Her reply was: “well you can’t be one of those with type 1 diabetes!”

His behaviour had also deteriorated and we were regularly being contacted by his preschool about his behaviour.Īt Josh’s first annual diabetes review, he was talking to one of the diabetes nurses about cars and he said that he wanted to be a racing driver when he grew up. I noticed that he was drinking a lot more than usual and he was going to the loo more frequently. Fortunately we caught his diagnosis very early. There’s no history of type 1 diabetes in the family so it was a complete shock when he was diagnosed. When he was younger he would sign his name Josh Malin PRD (Professional Racing Driver)! The support I have received from the type 1 diabetes community has been great- it gives me the determination to follow my dream.Īs a toddler, Josh would always have a toy car with him wherever he went and one of his first words was, predictably, “car”. It gives me great confidence to know that I’ve managed my type 1 diabetes and reached my goal – it was never going to stop me! As soon as I’ve finished my race I check again.

My Dad makes me check my blood glucose levels before the drivers are called to the collecting ring, which is about 15-20 minutes before my race starts. Josh receiving his Rookie of the Year award from British Touring Car Championship driver Dan Welch The adrenalin and nerves can often make my levels run a little high. I take great care when racing to ensure my blood glucose levels are under control. My good control helped me get my Association of Racing Drivers Schools racing licence. I have had an insulin pump for the past four years which literally changed my life. I am really lucky that my type 1 diabetes is well controlled at the moment. At the awards ceremony this year I was also named Rookie of the Year! My highlight of the season was winning both races at Silverstone in the final round of the competition.

After only having completed half of the races I came second in the championship! Last year at the age of 16 I was the youngest person to race cars in the MaX5 Racing Championship. I was sad, but determined to prove them wrong. When I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of four, I was told by a diabetes nurse that I would never be able to race. They play a huge part in my life, and at the age of 16 I am racing for real! Cars and racing have been my lifelong passions.
